Russia launched a massive drone strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and other areas early Thursday morning (May 14), killing at least one person and injuring dozens.
Reuters reports that this is the first time the Russian military has launched missile and drone attacks since the three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine ended.
Officials in the Kyiv region said the overnight Russian attack killed one person and injured dozens. Ukrainian Prime Minister Sviridenko said the targets were civilian infrastructure and residential buildings.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on social media on Thursday that a nine-story building in Kyiv was partially destroyed in a Russian airstrike. Rescue operations are underway, and dozens have been rescued so far, with one person killed, but residents may still be trapped in the rubble.
He also said that the Russian military launched 670 attack drones and 56 missiles at Ukraine overnight. "Since midnight yesterday, the Russian military has launched a total of 1,560 drones at our cities and communities. This is absolutely not something that people who think the war is about to end would do."
The Ukrainian Air Force stated that the Russian airstrikes included 675 drones and 56 missiles, most of which were shot down by air defense systems. However, 24 locations were hit a total of 38 times.
