The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution on Wednesday halting the Trump administration's military action against Iran. While the vote was largely symbolic, it represents another setback for Trump in Congress.
The House of Representatives passed the war powers resolution on Wednesday (June 3) by a vote of 215 to 208. Four Republican members joined Democrats in voting in favor.
This marks the first time since the start of the Iraq War three months ago that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives has approved a resolution aimed at forcing Trump to gradually halt military operations against Tehran.
A Democratic member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee posted on the X platform: "This is a loud and clear message from the American people to Trump: It's time to end this unpopular and illegal war on Iran that he has chosen."
Reuters reports that the vote reflects unease among some Republicans about Trump's handling of the conflict and marks a rare instance of bipartisan cooperation in limiting the president's war powers as the war enters its fourth month.
Three previous war powers resolutions had been narrowly rejected in the House of Representatives, but last month, when this resolution seemed poised to pass, House Republican leaders abruptly postponed the vote.
