Anthropic, an American artificial intelligence (AI) company, said the U.S. government has ordered the company to suspend all foreign citizens' access to and use of two AI models—Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
According to reports from Reuters and AFP, Anthropic issued a statement on Friday (June 12) saying that it had received an export control order from the U.S. government that day , prohibiting all foreign citizens, including foreign employees of Anthropic, from using Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for national security reasons.
The statement noted that the U.S. government did not disclose specific details of its national security concerns, but according to the company's understanding, the government believes there is a way to bypass or "crack" Fable 5 and Mythos 5. "Based on a national security order, we must abruptly suspend all customers' access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Other Anthropic models will not be affected."
On June 9th, Anthropic released its next-generation Mythos-level models, Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5. These two models demonstrate significant performance improvements in complex tasks such as code migration, visual understanding, and scientific research (e.g., genomics and drug design).
