(Taipei Comprehensive News) Cheng Li-wen, chairperson of Taiwan's largest opposition party, the Kuomintang, said she looks forward to visiting mainland China in the first half of next year and meeting with Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping, but this depends on whether the CCP invites her.
According to reports from the Liberty Times and the China Times, Cheng Li-wen said in an interview with the radio program "POP Great Citizen" on Friday (December 26) that she hopes to visit mainland China in the first half of next year because she will be busy with elections in the second half of the year.
When pressed on whether she would not have gone if there was no arrangement to meet with Xi Jinping, Cheng Li-wen responded "yes" and confirmed that the meeting was "at the level of president to president".
Regarding the suggestion from pro-KMT commentator Kuo Cheng-liang that the "Cheng-Xi meeting" would be suitable to be held on Youth Day, March 29th next year, Cheng Li-wen said that she had never been to Huanghuagang in Guangdong, "This suggestion is not bad," and indicated that she was "completely open" to various time arrangements.
When asked whether she would also consider visiting the United States while visiting mainland China, Cheng Li-wen replied that she would definitely "go to the United States," and hoped to do so in the first half of next year. She said that she had already received too many invitations from the United States, not only from the American Institute in Taiwan, but also from American think tanks, universities and the overseas Chinese community.
Cheng Li-wen officially assumed the position of KMT chairperson in November. She had previously stated publicly that if cross-strait reconciliation could be achieved, she would not rule out meeting with Xi Jinping, and would even be willing to meet him "a hundred times."
Kuomintang Vice Chairpersons Hsiao Hsu-tsen and Chang Jung-kung visited mainland China in October and November respectively, meeting with high-ranking officials including Song Tao, Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council. The Liberty Times, citing sources, reported that after negotiations, a consensus was reached between the two sides, and the "Xi-Zheng meeting" between Xi Jinping and Cheng Li-wen will take place around the Chinese New Year (February 2026).
