The 15th Parliament opened on Friday (September 5), marking a new phase in Singapore's politics. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, representing the government, delivered the policy address, outlining the fourth-generation leadership's vision and direction for the country over the next five years.

In May of this year, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong led his fourth-generation team to the general election for the first time, seeking the people's mandate. This government is not only the first formed by this new generation of leaders after winning the general election, but also the team at the helm that will guide Singaporeans forward amidst global change.

The policy guidelines revolve around five aspects: responding to external challenges, economic transformation, strengthening people's livelihood security, building a more equitable and inclusive society, and consolidating social cohesion and trust. They point the way for my country to maintain its own security, seize opportunities and ensure national prosperity in a turbulent world.

Delivering his first throne speech, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam said: "The 15th Parliament opens at a critical juncture in our nation's development. The world around us is undergoing profound changes. We must once again navigate these turbulent waters. We must choose our course wisely, forge new strategies, and move forward courageously and unitedly."

The word "unity" was mentioned at least five times in the President's speech, demonstrating the government's firm belief that only with unity among all Singaporeans can Singapore stand firm in a chaotic world.
